Weathering steel, or better known as corten steel, is steel made with the aim of eliminating the need for painting on steel.
The absence of paint finishes on steel forms the appearance of rust exposed like steel that has been rusty by weather for years.
Corten steel is also often referred to as corrosion-resistant steel and steel with good tensile strength.
Weathering refers to the chemical composition of the steel, which also allows the resistance of corten steel to corrosion to continue to increase compared to other steels.
This is because corten steel forms a protective layer on its surface due to the influence of the weather.
The slow process of corrosion from the protective layer is obtained from the combination of elements in corten steel.
The protective layer on the surface will continue to grow and regenerate continuously when affected by the weather.
Therefore, it can be concluded that steel is indeed left to rust to form a protective layer.

Basically, corten steel plates have two different types, namely ASTM A 242 corten steel and ASTM A 588 corten steel.

- Corten steel is very sensitive to humid subtropical climates

- Weathering that occurs on the surface of corten steel can cause rust stains on the surface of other fields close to the corten steel.
Use of Corten Steel
The first use of corten steel on architecture was at John Deere World Headquarters in Moline, Illinois.
The building was designed by architect Eero Saarinen and was completed in 1964.
Weathering steel is popularly used in outdoor parts, such as facades, bridges or sculptures.
One example is a large statue of Chicago Picasso that stands in front of the Dalet Center Courthouse plaza, Chicago.
